NW Corner

NW CORNER WORKS NEWS, IMAGES AND PROGRESS REPORTS

Following our application to the Community Ownership Fund to make complete the vital repairs needed in the NW corner of Shoalstone pool we have created this page for you to keep up to date with all the works happening. We will update this as the project progresses.

17/07/2026

We are open!!!  Our new valve has now been installed and the final pool prep has been completed, and we are very pleased to say the pool is now open for the summer season.

We still need to finalise this phase of the works, completing the external grouting/bolt tightening on the NW corner buttress, but we have achieved our aim of opening for this 2026 season.  We will come back to the works in the Autumn after another fundraising push.

29/06/2026

Unfortunately, things have not quite gone to plan.  The pool base is now finished, as are the internal works on the NW corner, but we are waiting for our new valve and associated parts to arrive.  As soon as that is in position this will enable us to begin pool prep in earnest.   We will be open as soon as the works are fully completed and we have made the pool itself safe for swimmers. We will keep you posted.  Please do be careful around the site as works are ongoing and stay out of the poolside areas.

27/04/2026

You may have noticed a little flurry of tidying up works at Shoalstone. We are pleased to say that contractors are due back on site to start mobilisation on the 7th May, weather permitting.  These works will include the repair to the base of the pool, the construction of the north-west buttress and the installation of a new outlet pipe and valve. We then will need to generally carry out our usual maintenance around the site ready for pool opening.  The intention is that we will be ready to open the pool mid June ish, but we will keep you posted.  Please do be careful around the site as works are ongoing and stay out of the poolside areas.

You may have noticed works have come to a stop at Shoalstone. This was initially due to unexpected water pressure build up from the shallow end causing the final concrete slab pour to delaminate and break. This was unforeseen and no fault of the contractor to design team. Plans have been in place to repair this and continue with the NW corner buttress concrete pour but tides and weather conditions have not been suitable to carry out these works and the decision has been made to delay the final repairs works to March/April where we will hopefully have better conditions. We have been maintaining the area as best we can, with repairs to damaged doors, fencing, railings, concrete areas and the green space, but please be careful of any damage and stay out of the poolside areas.

24/11/2025

Due to significant water pressure building up under the shallow end, this has caused a small area on the join to the deep end to come away. The contractors have been working hard to remedy this by digging back the area in preparation for a new mix of concrete with a specific additive to accelerate the drying time. This work will continue w/c 1st December, weather permitting.

03/11/2025

The final two pours were completed last week. The slab is now complete asides a small amount of concrete spraying around the edge. The tides were just about in our favour during the second our on Friday. Due to a slight sea swell and the high neap tides we did experience a small amount of overspill into the pool area, but nothing that impacted the pour. This week will be tidying up around the site and preparing for the final wall drilling and shuttering the NW corner ready for the buttress pour next week.

08/10/2025

This week work starts on the wall ties. Drilling has begun to fit the wall ties and make them tight to pull in and secure the wall. We have come across a few voids as expected and these will be filled and then the rods fitted.

02/10/2025

The first concrete has been completed. 12 cement trucks, 15 workmen and a lot of effort to get it poured, spread and levelled before it sets !!

16/09/2025

Breaking out the slope area and cutting out the wall along the base has begun to enable us to tie in the new base in the deep end. This should take a few more days, weather and sea conditions permitting.

05/09/2025

A very productive week. The weather has been on our side and Dyson Construction Ltd have finished the core drilling & piling well ahead of schedule. During the drilling, no voids were found which is great news. The socks were fitted and the grout poured. These have now set and work has begun to cut them down to size. Next we will be fitting dowels the the Southern wall and cut a 300mm (appx) channel along the base of the West & North walls to tie the new pool base in to.

29/08/2025

In the past few days we have now installed the dam on the west deck to enable the works to continue during higher tides. One more course of wooden sleepers and it will be complete. We also have two heavy duty pumps on site to pump out any ingress through the wall. Drilling will begin in the coming days for the piling.

19/08/2025

Work begins today with Dyson Construction Ltd. We will be preparing the area around the shelter for the welfare units and stores. Please note, the footpath will be diverted from Shoals restaurant across the green to the large gate at the top corner for the car park.

29/07/2025

The works notice boards are now in place. These boards show the scope of the works and the plans for the different phases on repairs.

21/7/2025
The pool will be closed and fenced off to begin preparation of the works on the pool walls and base. We will fence off the east and west ends of the pool to restrict access and the coastal path will be diverted along the top path past Shoals Restaurant.

7/6/2025

We have had approval from Torbay Council for the licence application to close the South West Coastal Path (SWCP) during works. Access will be diverted along the path where Shoals Restaurant is situated and re-join the SWCP at the west end of Shoalstone.

21/5/2025

We will be fully open for June but the likelihood is we will close in early July to make preparations for the planned works. Once we have confirmed dates, we will notify you on the website and social media platforms.

22/4/2025

Work begins today on the core drilling investigations. We’ve started well and found that there are, as expected, fissures allowing water ingress under the pool base slab. These will be investigated and will be vital in the design on the repairs later in the year.

The first stage of works will begin w/c 21st April. Dyson Construction will be drilling a number of core holes to investigate the scope on fissures and voids beneath the pool base at the deep end.
